Marriage Counseling in Fort Lauderdale

Hey There!

My name is Diana Garcia and I provide Marriage Counseling in Fort Lauderdale and throughout Broward County. You may be feeling:

  • Frustrated because you just had an WWIII disagreement over who was supposed to fold the laundry, or something else that feels minor but keeps happening.
  • Worried that you’re turning more into roommates than soulmates.
  • Stressed out over trying to balance parenting, working, and prioritizing your relationship. Unfortunately, your relationship has fallen to the back burner.

I understand, and I’m here to help. I help couples reconnect and build the skills to actually communicate, not just talk past each other.

If you’re ready to start feeling better, schedule a complimentary 20-minute consultation with me today.

My Approach to Couples Therapy in Fort Lauderdale

For couples therapy to work, both partners have to feel that I’m working for the relationship, not taking sides. I use the Gottman Method, as the primary framework for couples work, alongside Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and tools adapted from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

In practice, that means we’re not just building communication skills, we’re also looking at the emotional patterns and unspoken needs underneath the conflict, and helping you each respond to what’s actually happening rather than just reacting to it. Making sure you both feel heard is where we start. Then we get into the real work.

I dedicate the first four sessions to a thorough assessment so I understand your relationship before I start making recommendations. Here’s how that looks:

  • The first session is where we all meet together. I’ll explore what’s bringing you in and start gathering history on your relationship.
  • The second and third sessions are individual sessions with each partner. I get to know each of you better, your personal history, your family background, past relationships. Context matters.
  • Before the fourth session, you each complete the Gottman Institute’s research-based relationship assessments online, privately. These give me a detailed, structured picture of your relationship’s strengths and what we need to focus on.
  • In the fourth session, we meet together again. I share my feedback, we talk through what I found, and we build a clear plan for moving forward.

After the assessment, sessions are typically weekly or every other week, depending on what we find.

Throughout our sessions, I will provide tools to help you figure out what’s keeping you stuck and how to move past these disagreements so you can feel united again. My goal is to help you both feel the flutter you felt when you just knew your partner was the one.

Marriage Counseling in Fort Lauderdale FAQ

It depends on many different factors, including what brings you to couples counseling, how long you’ve been feeling stuck, and your goals for the sessions. I will make a specific recommendation after the four-session assessment.

This can be a common experience. I’d encourage you to consider if you’ve genuinely shared your desire to work on your relationship. If you feel like you have, then individual counseling might help you work on your role in the dynamic. Sometimes, when one partner starts making changes, it can shift the relationship.

Absolutely not! Many couples who are dating, living together, or in a committed relationship decide to work on their relationship.

There are no guarantees to engaging in marriage counseling. Still, many clients notice improved communication, having more fun and excitement again, and their relationship becomes a space of belonging.

The Gottman Method is one of the most research-backed approaches to couples therapy available. The Gottman Institute has studied thousands of couples to identify what builds lasting connection and what predicts relationship breakdown. Level 2 training means I’ve gone deeper into that research and the clinical skills to apply it, including assessment tools developed directly from that research base. Not all couples therapists are trained in the Gottman Method, and Level 2 specifically is less common. It’s one of the reasons couples seek me out.

Alongside the Gottman Method, I draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). EFT helps us get underneath the surface conflict to the emotional patterns and unmet needs that are actually driving it, which is often where the real work happens. ACT brings in tools to help you and your partner respond to difficult thoughts and feelings more flexibly, rather than just reacting. In practice, these approaches work together naturally, Gottman gives us the roadmap and the skills, EFT and ACT give us the depth.
